Dry skin

Honey

Can you ever go wrong with honey? No, you cannot. Most skin care products contain honey, so how can we exclude this from our list. You can use honey to make your own cleansers and scrub. Here are some simple homemade recipes featuring the humble honey.

Natural honey and almond scrub

Scrub away dead skin with this super powerful honey and almond scrub. Combine almonds, oatmeal, honey and the juice of one lemon. Blend them together and voila! you have your very own honey and almond scrub ready.

Wait, it's not over yet. There's a special way to use this special recipe. Apply on the face in small circular motions. The scrub also doubles as a face mask. Leave it on for 5-8 minutes as the ingredients wield their magic wand and give you soft and glowing skin.

Honey cucumber toner

Having summer blues? Fret not, here's what you need to do to get the skin that smiles even in the harsh summer sun.
Strain the juice of one cucumber and mix it with honey, you may also add rose water. Keep it stocked in the refrigerator, apply on the face with a cotton ball daily as often as you like.

Acne problems

Neem

Most women would have faced the problem of acne at some point or other in their life. Show acne the door with this very easy to make Neem face pack.
Soak dry neem powder in some lukewarm water or grind fresh neem leaves to a fine paste. Next, add rose water, sandalwood powder and juice of one fresh lime. Apply on the whole face or the affected area. Use 4 days in a week for acne free skin.

 Tomatoes

Now who would have thought that tomatoes could come in handy for treating acne? But they do. Tomatoes contain lycopene, an antioxidant that helps stave off wrinkles and fine lines, give a radiant complexion and what more, they also help treat acne.

Tomato and avocado face mask

Mash one ripe tomato and avocado together. You can also add half a teaspoon of turmeric to it. Turmeric has antibacterial properties and helps fight bacteria responsible for acne. For best results use this face pack 4 days in a week.

Onions

Surprised to see it on this list? Allow us to reveal the might of this wonder product. Onions have anti-inflammatory properties and not only help fight acne but also eliminate acne scars.

Onion oatmeal scrub

To a pot of boiling water add about 3 table spoons of oatmeal and let it simmer for around 5 mins. Next, add finely grinded paste of one medium onion to it. Turn off the flame and let it cool. You can store it in the refrigerator for about 1 week. You can also add honey or green clay to achieve the right consistency.  Apply on the face and leave it on for 20 mins and rinse it off.

Stretch marks

Oh, those nasty obstinate stretch marks! How many times have you wondered if there was something that could help you get rid of them? Your wish has been granted. It's time to say goodbye to those ugly stretch marks.

Olive oil and Aloe Vera pack

To make this recipe you will require ½ cup of olive oil, ¼ cup Aloe Vera gel, 2 vitamin A capsules and 4 Vitamin E capsules. First, break the Vitamin tablets in a bowl. To it add the rest of the ingredients. Apply on the affected area. Regular use of this mix is sure to make your stretch marks vanish away.

Sugar and almond oil scrub

Make a paste of sugar, almond oil and lemon juice. Rub the mixture on the affected area before taking a shower every day and you will see your stretch marks fade away within a short span of time.

Potato juice

Cut a potato into thick slices. Rub over the affected area for some time. Clean off with lukewarm water. Repeat the process every day for rapid results.

Sunburns and tanned skin

Is the summer heat driving you mad? And if, God forbid, you get a tan, there is no way you can do anything else to divert the attention from your sun roasted skin. Forget expensive chemical treatments, you can get rid of tan at home with these simple recipes. What more, you wouldn't have to dash to the supermarket to get the ingredients; chances are you would have them stocked in your refrigerator or in your kitchen cupboard.

Lemon

The citrus fruit is a wonder product if you wish to get rid of the unsightly sun tans. Squeeze the juice of 2 lemons; add some cucumber and rose water to it. Apply it on the affected area. If you have sensitive skin, do not use too much lemon juice and add the paste of potato instead. Applying curd on the affected area is also believed to help reduce the tanning.

Chapped lips

Say hello to baby soft lips with this miraculous technique. Apply some honey or petroleum jelly on your lips and then with the help of an old toothbrush, brush away the dead skin and lo and behold! you have baby soft lips.

Frizzy hair

Remember, how your grandmother always told you to oil your hair before washing? Well, she was right about this one. Slather your hair with some oil before washing your head. Know what? Many actresses including Deepika Padukone swear by this one. We recommend linseed oil. Why? Well, you have to try to know the reason.

How to cure Pimples naturally

When hairs, sebum, and skin cells group together, they may form a plug, which serves as a breeding ground for bacteria. Soon, swelling sets in and as the plug starts to “break down,” the result is an unattractive pimple. There are no age limitations when it comes to pimples. While teenagers and young adults suffer a greater chance of re-occurrence,  there are some individuals who never lose their susceptibility. Men and women in their 50s and 60s may still show signs of acne outbreaks.

While there are many different kinds of pimples, the most common types you may encounter, include:
a) White heads:
Pimples that remain under the surface of the skin.
b) Blackheads:
Pimples that appear on the surface of the skin and have a black appearance. Sometimes, individuals have mistaken their formation as a direct result of dirty skin, but this is not the case.
c) Papules:
Small lumps that are tender to the touch, which are pink in color.
d) Pustules:
These distinct pimples are red at the bottom and contain a visible amount of pus on top.
e) Nodules:
These pimples are rather large and painful, found deep in the skin. They are also solid to the touch.
f) Cysts:
When these deeply seeded pimples appear, scarring may occur. This type of pimple is quite painful and filled with pus.

Symptoms
The signs of pimples are unmistakable and may appear on the face, neck, shoulders, back, or chest. White heads and blackheads are the most common type of pimples you will encounter. Additional signs or symptoms associated with the pimple include:
a) Pain:
Blemishes on the face can be quite painful because of the pressure associated with clogged pores.
b) Pus:
Pus is a sign associated with an infected pimple. Pustules, nodules, and cysts most commonly bring about this symptom.
c) Scarring:
When pus-filled pimples appears on the body and face, there is a chance that scarring may occur. This outcome is often helped along when an individual doesn't properly care for their face. Picking at and squeezing infected pimples only increase the chances of suffering scars.
d) Extreme Redness:
Infected pimples, such as pustules, nodules, and cysts display rather red features.

Causes of Pimples
Pimples form when skin pores become blocked. There are numerous factors associated with the cause of pimples that you may or may not have already heard of. Some of these causes can be managed through lifestyle changes and healthy hygiene habits, while others simply lead to an unfortunate luck of the draw. Below you will find a list of possible pimple causes:
a) Hormones:
As if being a teenager wasn't hard enough, the raging hormones in the body increase during this time in a young man or woman’s life. This increase is responsible for the higher incidence of clogged oil glands, which cause an outbreak of pimples. The final result: every teenager’s nightmare – acne.
b) Pregnancy:
The hormones of a woman run wild during pregnancy, prompting changes in the body that produce pimples.
c) Birth Control Pills:
When starting a new form of birth control pill or stopping their use altogether, some products have been known to cause pimples. If this is a concern for you, asking your gynaecologist to help you select pills that do not have this side effect is recommended.
d) Menstruation Cycles:
Teenage girls and adult women are at risk for pimples as they approach the start of their next period. This is when hormone levels start to fluctuate.
e) Medication:
Some prescription drugs are known to cause blemishes on the face, neck, and back.
f) Cosmetics:
The type of makeup you put on your face can clog your pores, which could lead to an acne outbreak. When selecting cosmetics, you should seek out hypoallergenic items, as well as non-greasy or oily beauty products.
g) Heredity:
Family trees are pretty strong and if your parents had their fair share of pimples in the past, chances are you will too.
Now that you know the main causes of pimples, you should also familiarize yourself with some of the factors that makes this condition worse. Wearing tight clothing or head gear, such as bike helmets and sweaty bandannas could apply too much pressure for your pores to handle. In times of high humidity and pollution levels, pores may also suffer when you spend too much time outdoors.
Home Remedies for Pimples
a) Vitamins:
Pimples have been known to positively react to the addition of niacin (100 mg; three times per day), and vitamin A to a diet. 400 mg of vitamin E taken once per day also works wonders. You may also take 50mg of therapeutic zinc in tablet or capsule form (three times per day).
b) Fenugreek:
A useful paste can be created from the leaves of this vegetable, which is then applied to the face before you retire each night. At the start of the morning, the paste should be washed off using warm water. Pimples, especially blackheads are treated with this home remedy.
c) Orange Peel:
When orange peels are pounded and combined with water, an effective home treatment for pimples is created. Apply to affected areas and watch the results.
d) Lemon:
Apply lemon juice to pimples to reduce their size and intensity.
e) Garlic:
If you rub raw garlic on problem areas several times a day, you can clear up skin. You may also eat three seeds of raw garlic once daily for a month to see results. The garlic seeds purify the blood, which aids in keeping pimples at bay.
f) Coriander and Mint Juice:
A helpful herbal remedy for pimples includes the mixing of one teaspoon of coriander juice, combined with a pinch of turmeric powder. Every night, after thoroughly washing the face, apply the juice for an effective home remedy. Mint juice may also replace the coriander for this home treatment for pimples.
g) Hot Epsom Salts Bath:
It is believed that a hot Epsom salts bath taken two times per week will ease all cases of acne.
h) Cucumber:
Try applying grated cucumber over the face, neck, and eyes for the treatment of pimples and blackheads. This process should only take 15-20 minutes of your time.
Pimple Prevention
When you are looking for skin care measures that could prevent pimples, you might want to:
a) Practice Clean Skin Habits:
Keeping the skin well cleansed will deter the formation of pimples. Using a mild cleanser at the start of your day, in the evening, and before bed is recommended. Avoid scrubbing your skin, which has the potential to make matters worse.
b) Keep Your Hands Off:
Touching your skin passes extra dirt, oil, bacteria, and grime that can trigger acne and other skin irritations. Also, if you see a pimple start to form, you should refrain from squeezing, pinching, or picking.
c) Shave With Caution:
The way you shave can also irritate the skin to provoke pimples to form. Depending on your skin sensitivity, you may have to find a balance between electric and safety razors.

10 Must Know Things About Your Eyes

Few people could argue that without our 5 senses, life would be pretty dull.
All our senses are extremely important but I think if you asked most people which sense would they least like to lose they would probably say their vision.
As with most of our abilities, our vision is something that many of us take for granted.
If you stop and think for a moment, you will realize that just about everything we do in our day to day life involves our vision. During this article I am going to try and see if I can get you to start thinking a little bit more about your eyes.
Listed below is my top 10 list of weird and wonderful things you didn't know about your eyes

10. Everyone needs reading glasses as they get older ....

This is assuming that you already have perfect distance vision.
If you are currently reading this article and are under 40 years of age with perfect distance vision, I can say with absolute certainty that you will need reading glasses at some point in the future.
For about 99% of the population the age that you will first start needing reading glasses is between 43 and 50 years old.
This is because the lens in your eye slowly loses its focusing ability with age.
In order to focus things near to you, your lens has to change from a flat to a more spherical shape and it loses the ability to do this as you get older.
As you get to around 45 years old you will start to hold things further away from you to keep them focus.

9. The lens in your eye is quicker than any camera lens...

Just behind the pupil sits the eyes natural lens, whose function is to focus on the object you are looking at.
Just take a minute to glance around the room and think about how many different distances you are focusing at.
Every time you do this, the lens in your eye is instantly changing focus without you even being aware of it !!
Compare that with a camera lens which takes a few seconds to focus between one distance and another.
Just be thankful that the lens in your eye is as quick as it is, otherwise things would be continually going in and out of focus.

8. Your eyes are fully developed by the age of 7 years old ....

By the age of 7 years old our eyes are fully developed and are physiologically the same as adults eyes.
It is for this reason that it is vitally important to pick up a lazy eye before we reach this age.
The earlier a lazy eye is diagnosed, the greater the chance it will respond to treatment, as the eyes are still developing and capable of an improvement in vision.
Beyond 7 years old no amount of treatment will result in any improvement in vision.
7. You blink approximately 15,000 times each day ...

Blinking is a semi-involuntary function meaning we do it automatically, but can also choose to blink if we so require.
Blinking is an extremely important function of your eyes as it helps
remove any debris on the surface of your eye, by spreading fresh tears over them.
These tears help to nourish your eyes with oxygen and also have important bacterial properties.
You can think of the function of blinking as being similar to the action of the windscreen wipers on your car, cleaning and removing everything to keep you seeing clearly.

6. Everyone gets cataracts as they get older ...

People don't realize that cataracts are just a normal consequence of getting older and everyone gets them at some point in their life.
You can think of cataracts as being similar to getting grey hair, in that it is just a normal natural age change.
The average age people first get cataracts is about aged 70 years old and by 80 years old you are guaranteed to have cataracts.
In the same way that you could not find any aged 80 years old without grey hair, it would be equally impossible to find anyone over 80 years old without cataracts.
Cataracts refer to a gradual clouding of the lens in your eye and typically take about ten years from onset to them needing treatment.

5. Diabetes is often first detected during an eye test ...

People who suffer from type 2 diabetes(the type you develop later in life) are often symptom free, meaning they often don't even know that they have it.
This type of diabetes is commonly picked up during an eye test as it can be seen as tiny hemorrhages from leaking blood vessels at the back of your eye.
This certainly is good reason to get your eyes tested regularly.

4. You see with your brain and not your eyes ...

The function of your eyes is to collect all the required information about the object you are looking at.
This information is then passed from your eye to the brain via the optic nerve.
It is the brain (visual cortex) where all this information is analyzed to enable you to seethe object in its finished form.
This is not to say that your eyes don't play an important role as they certainly do.

3. Your eyes can adapt to blind spots in your vision ...

Certain eye conditions such as Glaucoma and certain general health conditions such as having a stroke, can lead to you developing blind spots in your vision.
This would be extremely debilitating if it wasn't for your brain and your eyes ability to adapt to make these blind spots disappear.
It does this by suppressing the blind spot in your affected eye and letting your other good eye fill in the gaps.
It is adaptation like this that makes your eyes so resilient.

2. 20:20 vision is not the best vision you can have ...

When people hear the phrase 20:20 vision they assume that this is the best vision possible.
However this is not true as 20:20 vision refers to what the average adult should be able to see.
If you imagine a typical eye test chart the 20:20 vision is probably only the line second from the bottom.
The line below it is even smaller than 20:20 vision and would mean you have 20:16 vision.
So don't be so impressed next time someone tells you they have 20:20 vision!

1. Your eyes water when they are dry ...

I know this might sound crazy but this is one of strange facts about your eyes.
Your tears are made up of 3 different components and they are water, mucus and fat.
If these 3 components are not in exactly the right quantities, your eye can become dry as a consequence.
Your brain responds to this dryness by producing extra water and hence your eyes water.

5 Truth About Hair Conditioners

5 Truth About Hair Conditioners

visit us : www.forangelsonly.org

Most women take great care in picking the right shampoo for their hair, and also wash their hair frequently,but they do not use a hair conditioner as religiously. A lot of false beliefs, and maybe even the lack of expected results from a conditioner used previously, put off many women from enjoying the benefits of regular use. Here's setting the facts straight on hair conditioners!

Reason No. 1: Hair conditioners should be used on special occasions only.

The Truth: The long-lasting effects of using a hair conditioner can only be experienced when it is used after every hair wash. The frequency of shampooing and conditioning will depend on the hair type, but using a conditioner after every shampoo makes sure your hair stays smooth, manageable and soft always. While your shampoo removes grime and dirt from your tresses, think of your conditioner as nourishment for your hair! Would you want to restrict it to just special occasions?

Reason No. 2: Natural remedies should be used for conditioning hair.

The Truth: Yes, nature does hold some great secrets for beautiful hair, but is it convenient and practical for you to prepare and apply natural remedies like lime, henna, curd, egg whites, etc., every time you shampoo your hair? On thinking back, you'll realise that you may have tried to keep up the regimen, and then given up due to lack of time or the extra effort required in preparing the potion. While it's good practice to pamper your hair with natural remedies, keep this schedule for weekends when you are at leisure. Keep a suited hair conditioning product (that works just as well!) for your hectic weekdays, so that you don't lose out on regular hair conditioning that your hair needs.

Reason No. 3: My hair is greasy, so I am not supposed to use a hair conditioner.

The Truth: The hair cannot be greasy, it's probably the scalp. And ironically, it's when the scalp is dry that it causes the oil glands to produce more oil! Once on the scalp, this excess oil transfers to the hair itself. Use a shampoo suited for oily scalp and be sure to wash your hair daily to combat excess oil build-up. Using a conditioner with light moisturising action will help nourish it with required moisture, so you can maintain an oil-free scalp, with smooth and soft hair, all at the same time!

Reason No. 4: I don't need it as my hair is short.

The Truth: Even short hair needs its beauty and health! Hair care experts say that people with hair over 10 centimetres long can enjoy the advantages of using hair conditioners.

Reason No. 5:  Hair conditioners make my hair limp / flat / heavy / too dry.

The Truth: These effects look like classic symptoms of wrong application of a hair conditioner! Not many people are aware that the quantity and application procedure of a conditioner are very different from that of a shampoo.

Here's the ideal way to apply your hair conditioner:

After washing off the shampoo from your hair, use a towel to pat-dry it slightly.
Apply it gently half way down the hair shaft (from ear-level), extending downwards
Concentrate on the tips of your hair
The quantity depends on your hair type and conditioner type, but usually a dollop of the size of a walnut should be fine
Leave it on as per instructions on the pack and wash off thoroughly

Also remember:

Conditioner should NOT be applied on the scalp, the scalp makes its own oils.

A conditioner is not meant to lather, so don't apply huge amounts to make it lather.

Rinse it off thoroughly each time, or it may cause build-up on your hair, making them heavier.

Types of Phobias ,Causes , Indication and Danger Aspects

Have you been facing the challenge of some events that you should not fear about? Are your fears gearing to some other aspects of your life? Are you affected socially, mentally and physically? Do they cause you much stress? Well you are not just having panic attacks. You may already be encountering phobias.
Phobia is a strong fear or dislike of someone or something. It is described as an irrational state. It is very powerful and can affect you in several ways. You may tend to be afraid of spiders, cockroaches and other insects. Sometimes you may also be afraid of confined spaces. At times you may also fear the fact of traveling in elevators. It is therefore best to gather more facts about phobia that may cause panic attacks later on.

Fact # 1: Types of Phobias
There are various types of phobias, the most common of which are:
1. Claustrophobia, the fear of being confined in a small place such as an elevator or closet;
2. Agoraphobia, fear of large open spaces;
3. Authophobia, fear of being alone;
4. Acrophobia, the fear of heights;
5. Necrophobia, the fear of death and dead bodies;
6. Mysophobia, the fear of dirt;
7. Photophobia, intolerance of light;
8. Coitophobia, the fear of sexual intercourse;
9. Gatophobia, the fear of cats;
10. Nyctophobia, the fear of night;
11. Hydrophobia, the fear of water;
12. Androphobia, the fear of men; and
13. Gynephobia, the fear of women.
Fact #2: Results of Phobias
If phobia is not addressed immediately, the condition may become severe up to the point that the individual̢۪s existence will be severely disturbed not only by their fears but their effort to hide their condition. Actually, there are a lot of people who are in dangers with their relationship towards families and friends, and their jobs due to the fact that they cannot handle the severity of their phobia.
The phobia may naturally improve for quite a period of time but it will not stay away until the individual will be given therapy that is particularly planned for her. It is also said that persons who are alcoholic have more chances of suffering phobia than those who are not. To some extent it may work the other way around. This means that if you develop fear in your system, you may have the tendency to depend on alcohol or other bad habits.
Fact #3: Causes and Danger Aspects of Phobias
There are no evidences yet that will prove the particular cause of phobias, but some think that phobias are:
1. Transferred among family members;
2. It is also said that they are manipulated by way of life; and
3. It can be activated by living incidents.
Fact #4: Indications of Phobias
The major sign of phobia frequently entails panic attack. This leads to sensing of fright, dismay, or fear, in spite of identification that those sensations have no real basis for alarm. Other indications of phobia are briefly explained as follows:
1. Phobia sufferers may also experience physical signs like trembling, fast heart rate, difficulty in breathing, and an overpowering wish to get away from the circumstances which causes the fearful response.
2. Sometimes people also take tremendous procedures to get away from the condition.
Phobias must be carefully recognized from fear and anxiety. All these three types of mental health problems have different characteristics, although some of the symptoms may be similar. You must also take note that phobia is another product of your mind which you can control by yourselves. However, if you cannot control it alone do not be embarrassed to ask an expert to help you manage your phobia. Never try to avoid this illness by taking drugs or alcohol because it will only aggravate your condition.

Ways to Deal With the Migraine Headaches

Ways to Deal With the Migraine Headaches

Migraine headaches seem to be caused in part by changes in the level of a chemical made in the brain called serotonin. Serotonin plays many roles in the body, and it can have an effect on blood vessels. When serotonin levels are high, blood vessels constrict (shrink). When serotonin levels fall, the blood vessels dilate (swell). This swelling can cause pain or other problems.

Many things can affect the level of serotonin in your body, including your level of blood sugar, certain foods and changes in your estrogen level if you're a woman.

What does a migraine feel like?

The pain of a migraine headache can be intense. It can get in the way of your daily activities. Migraines aren't the same for all people. Possible symptoms of migraines are listed in the box below.

You may have a "premonition" several hours to a day before your headache starts. Premonitions are feelings you get that can signal a migraine is coming. These feelings can include intense energy, fatigue, food cravings, thirst and mood changes.

Possible symptoms of migraines

    * Intense throbbing or dull aching pain on one side of your head or both sides
    * Pain that worsens with physical activity
    * Nausea or vomiting
    * Changes in how you see, including blurred vision or blind spots
    * Being bothered by light, noise or odors
    * Feeling tired and/or confused
    * Stopped-up nose
    * Feeling cold or sweaty
    * Stiff or tender neck
    * Light-headedness
    * Tender scalp

Different kinds of migraine headaches

Yes. The most common are classic migraine and common migraine.

Classic migraines start with a warning sign, called an aura. The aura often involves changes in the way you see. You may see flashing lights and colors. You may temporarily lose some of your vision, such as your side vision.

You may also feel a strange prickly or burning sensation, or have muscle weakness on one side of your body. You may have trouble communicating. You may also feel depressed, irritable and restless.

Auras last about 15 to 30 minutes. Auras may occur before or after your head pain, and sometimes the pain and aura overlap, or the pain never occurs. The head pain of classic migraines may occur on one side of your head or on both sides.

Common migraines don't start with an aura. Common migraines may start more slowly than classic migraines, last longer and interfere more with daily activities. The pain of common migraines may be on only one side of your head.
How long do migraines usually last?

Migraines can last from 4 to 72 hours. They may happen only once or twice a year, or as often as daily. Women are more likely to have migraines than men.

    * Pea pods
    * Pickled, preserved or marinated foods, such as olives and pickles, and some snack foods
    * Raisins
    * Red plums
    * Sauerkraut
    * Seasoned salt
    * Snow peas
    * Soy sauce

How are migraines treated?

There are 2 types of medicines for migraine treatments. One type focuses on relieving the headache pain. This type of treatment should be started as soon as you think you're getting a migraine. The other type includes medicines that are used to prevent headaches before they occur.
Can nonprescription medicines help relieve the pain?

Yes. Nonprescription medicines that can help relieve migraine pain include aspirin, acetaminophen (one brand name: Tylenol), an acetaminophen, aspirin and caffeine combination (one brand name: Excedrin Migraine), ibuprofen (one brand name: Motrin), naproxen (brand name: Aleve), and ketoprofen (brand name: Orudis KT).
What about prescription medicines?

People who have more severe pain may need prescription medicine. A medicine called ergotamine can be effective alone or combined with other medicines. Dihydroergotamine is related to ergotamine and can be helpful.

Other prescription medicines for migraines include sumatriptan, zolmitriptan, naratriptan, rizatriptan, almotriptan, eletriptan and frovatriptan.

If the pain won't go away, stronger medicine may be needed, such as a narcotic, or medicines that contain a barbiturate. These medicines can be habit-forming and should be used cautiously.
Can medicine help prevent migraines?

Yes. Medicine to prevent migraines may be helpful if your headaches happen more than twice a month or if your headaches make it hard for you to work and function. Examples of medicines used to prevent migraines include propranolol, timolol, divalproex and some antidepressants.

Talk to your doctor about which medicine is best for you. Nonprescription and prescription medicines that are used often or in large doses may cause other problems.
What else can I do to prevent migraines?

Try to avoid foods or other things that seem to cause migraines for you. Keep a journal to help you identify triggers. Get plenty of sleep and drink plenty of fluids. Try to relax and reduce the stress in your life. Also try to get regular exercise. Aerobic exercise can help reduce tension as well as keep your weight in check. Obesity can contribute to migraines.

    * Put a cold compress or cloth over your forehead.
    * Massage your scalp using a lot of pressure.
    * Put pressure on your temples.

Lauki Juice can be injurious to health

Lauki Juice can be injurious to health

Lauki juice or bottle gourd juice can be harmful for health? Yes, says doctors at a private hospital.

A CSIR scientist died after consuming bottle gourd and bitter gourd juice on an empty stomach in New Delhi. The 60-year-old scientist Sushil Kumar and his wife had been consuming the bottle gourd juice for more than four years to keep their diabetes in control.

According to Dr M P Sharma, Head of the Department, Gastroenterology and Internal Medicine at Rockland Hospital, the couple had diabetes problem. But Sushil Kumar passed away after the consumption of bottle gourd juice, whereas, his wife complained of vomiting blood and severe diarrhoea, but had a narrow escape. The doctors conducted an endoscopy on his wife and found her entire stomach was inflamed. There were ulcers in her stomach.

Dr Sharma said the vegetables and fruits from the cucumber family have harmful toxins called tetracyclic triterpenoid cucurbitacins compound, which is responsible for the bitter taste.

However, the doctor suggests that old people having diabetes and other problems may go for bottle gourd juice removing the bitter part of the vegetable. Because higher levels of cucurbitacins compound causes harm to health due to either improper storage of vegetables or high temperature. Dr. Sharma said that the bitter parts of fruits are traditionally cut apart and not consumed. In case of vegetables, cooking helps to destroy such toxins.

Doctors said that two more such cases have been reported earlier in India — one at the Himalayan Institute in Dehradun and another from Ahmedabad. "Higher levels of cucurbitacins compounds are triggered by high temperature, wide temperature swings and also due to improper storage of vegetables," said a doctor.

Tips For Healthy Skin In Summer

During summer the water loss is increased as body tries to keep itself cool. The water loss is rapid due to humid temperatures so it is very important to consume fluids regularly in order to keep your skin hydrated. Even though enough fluid might be consumed, there might be times when the fluid loss is very rapid. Once this occurs the sebum is not properly cleansed from the skin resulting in blocking or clogging of the pores present in the skin. This over time results in acne formation. So in summer it is very important that you regularly cleanse your skin.

A good skin care regimen for summer includes:

1. Cleansing the face regularly with vegetable soaps or natural cleansers.

2. Hydrating your skin with alcohol free toner. If not you can fill a clean bottle with filtered water and spray it on your face more often so that the skin is hydrated and also the excess sebum is washed away.

3. Exfoliation of skin should be done maximum twice a week.

4. It is important to wear light moisturizers. Remember using petroleum based moisturizers only results in clogging of the pores and results in acne.

Benefits of COFFEE

1. Coffee is the #1 source of antioxidants in the American diet

While fruits and veggies are still the richest sources of antioxidants, it turns out that for Americans, coffee is the main basis of antioxidant consumption (according to the Institute of Coffee Studies at Vanderbilt University). Black tea and bananas came in second and third place, respectively. Surprisingly, both caffeinated and decaffeinated coffee provide similar amounts of antioxidants.

2. Coffee increases your metabolism

Studies also show that coffee is very beneficial in terms of weight loss. It is a common misconception that coffee is an appetite suppressant, however, your morning cup can significantly speed up metabolism by about 10 percent. The National Research Council on Diet and Health found that metabolic rates will be highest during the first three hours following consumption. Just make sure to skip the added sugars, syrups, and whipped toppings found in many store-bought coffee drinks.

3. Coffee can improve short-term memory

According to studies published in The Journal of the American Medical Association, caffeine is a cognitive stimulant that actually boosts brain functioning. Furthermore, coffee reduces levels of beta amyloid, a protein in the brain that is responsible for Alzheimer's disease.

4. Coffee lowers the rates of some cancers

According to WebMD, coffee drinkers are 50 percent less likely to get liver cancer. By drinking 2 cups per day, you're also slashing your risk of getting colon cancer by 25 percent. Some studies have also found ties to lower rates of breast and skin cancers as well.

5. Coffee can reduce risk for Type 2 diabetes

WebMD also asserts that coffee contains chemicals that lower blood sugar, making heavy coffee drinkers half as likely to get diabetes as light to non-coffee  drinkers. 1-3 cups per day can reduce the risk for diabetes by single digits, but people who drink 6 cups or more per day can slash their chances by up to 54 percent.

6. Coffee is actually good for your teeth

We all know that one of the biggest cons of drinking coffee is a stained smile, but the beverage can also have a positive effect on teeth. According to a 2009 article published in the Wall Street Journal, people who drink coffee are less likely to have cavities. Roasted coffee beans have antibacterial effects against microorganisms like Streptococcus, which play a hand in causing tooth decay.

7. Coffee can help prevent/stop headaches

Have you ever wondered why caffeine is one of the main ingredients in migraine medication like Excedrin Migraine? WebMD explains that blood vessels increase in size during a migraine-- caffeine works to decrease the size of blood vessels before they can affect nerves in the brain. So, drinking coffee in the early stages of a headache can help minimize the severity later on.
